Ok got my 168ft x 20ft carport/covered parking structure welded up… cleaned, primed and painted… now i have to skin the roof…
it’s 6 bays 3 spots per bay… 8″ Z perlins 5ft o/c didn’t buy one piece of new steel… only new thing (purchased off ebay) are the the 56… 3/4″ x 5″ redheads that anchor the posts to the slab… I had all the beams posts and all but 4 of the Z perlins (my buddy with the scrap yard donated the last 4)
the roof skin is called “barn master” i think… each sheet covers 36″… i have a stack in my warehouse of 16ft sheets and a stack of 8ft sheets… so with overlap and overhang I’ll use one of each for each run…
now… I’ll use the self drillng screws with the rubber washer to screw down the roof… but what grabs better the fine thread screws or the course thread screws… i can get either…. and is there any reason to get anything longer than say… 3/4″? looking at about 25 screws per run… x 56 runs so 1400 screws… give or take…
so does it matter course or fine thread?

Fine goes into steel, coarse into wood.

the screws i usually use... are course... self drilling... but they have a fine thread version... I think usually the fine thread are for when you are attaching something to thicker metal... like maybe over 1/8" thick? but which holds better/less likely to strip? light gauge to light gauge?p
still fine thread, they don't backout as quick.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

A fine thread screw will have a whole thread or two in thin steel, while a coarse thread will have less than one whole thread, it doesn't hold.
I used some stainless steel self drilling screws from McFeeley's on a project. They worked pretty well, although I did actually predrill a small pilot hole. Similar to these

Also used some of these to put planks on a trailer (used 2" long but too lazy to find the actual screw...):

metal purlins?
Coarse if for wood substrate/underlayment, fine is for metal.

That's a fine bit of punnery, but a coarse thought
