I’m adding on to an existing building with 1×8 redwood v-rustic siding (painted). Heartwood redwood is expensive and lumber dealers are recommending finger jointed redwood or pine as an alternative. Any experience out there with the longevity of this stuff?

we only use it on work that is in need of a primed board for exterior trim..
where we are not too concerned with the appearnace..
the joints photograph and become more prominent with a couple of changes in season...
if we want good looking , long lasting, we either go with CVG redwood or .. most of the time..
we use GP PrimeTrim....
b but hey , whadda i no
*I had finger jointed pine come apart after 5 yrs, at the joints. It had one coat of primer and a coat of good quality latex acrylic. It was in an unprotected location got lots of direct sun and about 15" hard rain per year. The fingers were only about 1/2" long.
*I would rather use finger joint and preprimed than something with any knots but not for a quality structure. FJ stuff is better now than it was a few years ago but the problem is that the glue at the joint fills the wood cells so when the wood moves and changes with the weather the joint area of the cells reacts differently, therefore the telegraphing which really shows up at low angle light. In short, the product is ok but the appearance might not be.
