Several of us around here have been debating the question of finish flooring under kitchen cabinets and appliances. I think that sometimes it makes sense and you can get away with not putting it under everything, and in other cases, you must. I think it depends on the type of flooring, wood plank, tile or vinyl. What do others do? Spending big bucks for expensive hardwood seems a waste under a big profesional range, or large center island but then there is the level problem. Also fastening cabinets down to a tile floor would be a pain.

David, I usually run wood floors under the cabinets, utilizing shorts and uglies. The time and hassle you save by not having to shim the cabinets or put plywood fillers where the appliances go is worth the extra cost of material. But, if the client thinks they're saving money, sometimes I stop the wood short. Sometimes the flooring goes in after the cabinets anyway.
Tile and sheet flooring usually goes in after the cabinets are in. The important thing is to try to keep the countertop at around 36" off the finish floor near the range and dishwasher.
