We have salvaged redwood beams, which have been milled into clear, tight grain boards we will use for trimming out our family room. Most of the trim will be 4″-8″ wide. The room faces south, but has an overhang,so it does not get direct summer sun, only early morning or late afternoon sun in the winter.
Question: What would be the best product to seal the redwood? Should we use a clear product alone, or would something with a little stain in it keep the color?

I've recently constructed about 60 l.f. of 3 foot high wainscoting out of salvaged redwood tongue and groove 1X6 in my office. Also clear, vertical grain- beautiful stuff. After some experimenting, I decided that Watco Danish oil (Fletco corp) did the most to enhance the color and the grain. It's easy to apply and forgiving. when used on furniture it requires reapplication and multiple coats. On my wainscoting I'm happy with the appearance after one coat, though I may choose to reapply in a year or two..
