typical 2.5" casing...use 4d finish inside..... 6d finish outside
typical 3.5" base.. 6d
as your base / trim gets thicker or the plaster gets thicker.. you need to increase the length .. a rule of thumb is you want 1.5" into the framing
I was taught that the length of the fastener (nail or screw) should be at least equal to twice the thickness of the material(s) to be attached to the substrate.
For example... 5/8 thick moulding + 1/2" drywall= 1-1/8", so the fastener needs to enter into the stud 1-1/8", so the total fastener length should be 2-1/4".
A #8 finish nail @ 2-1/2", or a stick finish nail at 2-3/8".
Where the thinner edge of the casing laps to the opening frame....a #4F is fine, even better is a #5F.
Base board does okay with number #8F, until you need extra holding power to make the base conform to a distortion in the wall framing...then a #10F, #12F or #16F will help.
In todays world of big boxes, increased concern for inventory turn ratios & ROI (return on investment)....the normal stock available for a finish nail is #4, 6, 8, 16 !
#5F is impossible to find, 10 & 12F is difficult.
The same rule of thumb applies to many applications, BUT.... as always there are exceptions and SOP & code differences.
