I’m sure this question is asked a million times, but I had a search through old posts and didn’t find anything definative:
So, what I am looking for is a suggestion for finish the cedar decking on a raised deck over a living area (widow’s walk kind of thing). The decking will sit on sleepers on a well drained roof. I love the colour of the cedar right now, and would like to keep that, if possible. I’m not too keen on a varathane type finish (one that builds up a coating). Suggestions?
Oh, our climate here is EXTREMELY dry, but long winters with snow. Rot is very rare, mostly the problem is things just drying out, cracking and falling apart.
Thanks for any advice.

I wouldn't use anything that coats the wood (stays on the surface and doesn't soak in). Almost all varnishes will begin to crack and peel after a few years. I would use either a penetrating oil or an oil-based transparent clear stain. I'm sure others will respond and maybe even give you good names. There are also clear penetrating products that protect the wood from decay, though that isn't as important with cedar.
