Folks:
I am looking for advice, as I am getting two different opinions from professional painting contractors.
We are having new red cedar shingles installed on our house. They are pre-primed with that gray colored oil based primer. These shingles are on the second and third floor of our house, the first floor is already painted with latex (yellow) paint on cedar clapboards.
One painter wants to put two coats of colored/tinted oil based stain, he says it will match the latex paint on the first floor.
The other painter wants to put one coat of tinted oil based primer, then one coat of latex paint on top. He says the stain will not match the latex paint below.
I like the idea of the stain, no future peeling, just slow fading.
Any thoughts?!?
Many thanks, Rick

Rick - I'd vote for stain for maintenance purposes. It won't match the latex paint color but (1) You can play with the tint to get it closer (and so what if it's not an exact match) and (2) Yellow is a pretty fugitive color anyway and will fade a lot.
