Hey there,
My husband and I are building onto our existing house with a 700 sq ft. addition and open porch. Although the base structure will be pt on posts w/doug fir decking, the posts and roof framing are native pine (post are stripped and unmilled, the framing will be 4 by 8 pine beams s4s with fancy scrolled ends – kind of craftsman style). The ceiling will be t&g bead board with a overlayment of 1/2″ cdx, ice & h20 shield, then shingles.
All that being said, does anyone have any input on treatment of the posts and beams as well as the ceiling t&g. We are in a pretty dense pine forest in SE NH and it can get pretty moist in the summer months. I’m thinking of spar varnishing the vertical posts and staining the beams to match the red cedar found on other parts of the house. Would you pretreat these with any anti mold agents? Or recommend any other products instead of the above.
And then for the t& g – I’m thinking of staining it white using a Cabot product for the open, fresh feeling of a porch but am worried about black mold developing. Should we consider the coated beadboard I’ve seen around on new builds? Are there different composites of such?
Interested in any input. I’m tired of seeing black mold mid July! Julia
