I am installing new hardwood floors — 1/4 sawn white oak, 5 inch. My previous floors were very worn and damaged from alot of sunlight — very dry and splintery and the poly was flaking off. I’d like to use a finish other than poly. Can I use tung oil? Do I then need to wax? What were old floors done with? I’m creating a “cottage” look and don’t want the floors to look too pristine and plastic. Also, we live near the water and have kids — we need the floors to be durable and low maintenance. Thanks!

I asked that same question here and it was suggested that I use a product called polo plaz, i did and I love it. it is a moisture cured eurathane very durable and tough.
*Hey Ron, Where did you end up getting that? Mail order or somewhere in your sunny part of the country? Also, was it as easy to use as folks say?Mike

*Mike,I had to order it directly from the manufacturer. i got their number from their website called them and they put me in contact with a sales rep. I could only order it by either a 5 gal can or 6 one gal cans. They have a pretty good stain also(they threw it in with my order). it is a eurathane based stain that is user friendly. It is pretty easy to use. I suggest applying it with a roller and tipping off with a good brush. it has a 24 hr set up time before sand and recoat, 3 days to walk on it 7 to move the furniture in. The cost per gal is a little less than the diamond coat varathane that HD sell but add shipping and its a tad more. Ill tell you this at first it looked ok but after it aged(its been about 6 months) man what a beautiful finish nice and deep. shows the wood grain beautifully. Oh yea, I put on three coats. Hope this helps.
*Excellent info Ron...Thanks!Mike
