would depend on the exterior of the house .
mine is circa 1875 former 2 room stone school house which i have converted into a 15 room incl 4 baths 2 floors
As for the fire place I built a cut limestone arched top fireplace , all visible surfaces are cut stone including the chimney where it projects from the roof in total about 35' high
brick ones look goog on a brick house especially if you use antique brick to blend in with old brick on house
ps . stone fireplace is in family room which has barn beams supporting ceiling and 2nd floor
also i used a piece of barn beam for a mantle above which i hung a pair of 6' wide set of bullhorns from Fla.
the wwhole idea was to have the room look rustic
That sounds awesome dude. My house is a Dark red brick house. Storey and a half, gales on both ends I would definintely not call a fancy house I imagine there was no particular style attempted rather a somewhat simple house designed to stand a long time. I've got flagstone accents on the front porch, and am considering doing a stone surround around the front door. I like the brick fireplace. I had a friend suggest river rock which I don't mind the look of either.
i would go with brick as it would of likely have been what would have been used at the time of the origional construction
i tend to view a clients home in a overall point of view so that if i am building a addition i dont want it to look like a addition but just a larger house that all runs together as if it was all built at the same time ps. merely a view point not a law.
Sounds like you might have a craftsman style house--if so, go sturdy & natural--the river rocks or bricks would be perfect. Make it hefty!
