I am starting a framing job tomorrow morning on a semi-detached duplex. Usually not a problem but the drawings call for two stud walls to separate each unit with tin strips for fire stops at the top and bottom plates. I am unfamiliar with this method and would like any and all advice.

Arty,
Take some free advice.... Check with the local Building Department before you get to far along! When you deal with party walls everbody wants it done their way, which might not be the same way the plans call out. In short lots of $$$ to change when your calling in the 2nd time on your rough frame inspection.
We use insulation to fire stop between floors & every 10 on the party walls, along with 5/8 drywall & lots of mud. Other times (different project) we used shaft liner foundation to roof & then built away from the shaft liner.
Good Luck with the project!
This is not the first duplex that i have done but all the others cinder block party walls. What gets me is that all the prints call for is a tin fire stop at the wall plates. This is really throwing me off. I guess I should call the inspector in the morning just to be safe
Arty - I'm not trying to be a smartass, but how did you bid this if you weren't comfortable with the detail? Have you spoken to the architect who drew the plans?
