So I kicked on the new gas log tonight to give it a test run. It’s a Heat & Glo 6000GL, with a 6″ tumbled marble mosaic tile surround and a mantelpiece of red oak that is stained & finished w/ polyurethane. Very nice to look at.
It’s been burning merrily away for a couple of hours now, and the main level is pervaded with this nasty stank that smells quite a bit like…no, exactly like smouldering plastic. The tile surround above is hot to the touch, and the mantelpiece is quite warm as well, but there doesn’t seem to be any sign of heat damage or anything, or any sign that the wood is going to spontaneously burst into flame.
Is this funk just part of the “break-in process for a new gas log – stuff from the manufacturing process burning off? Or should I panic?

Hard to say from where I sit.
But I do know that there are specific clearances required for any combustibles projecting off the wall surrounding the fireplace opening.
Time to get the owners manual out and start reading. Make sure what You have is considered safe.

According to the install/owners manual, the maximum allowable projection at 5" above the opening is 2.5". My mantel is less than 1" out at 6" above the opening. So no worry there, I guess.
Boy, am I glad I thought to do this BEFORE we move in this weekend. Half past 11:00, 40 degrees out, and I've got all the windows on the ground floor open. Ugh.

I know that when I turned on my new BBQ a couple of months ago it smoked and stank for a good 5 minutes. Quickly read the manual and, sure enough, they mention a "break in" for the paint.
More than likely, it's the break in smell. You've got heat resistant paint that has to cure, machine oil than has to burn off, and an accumulation of dust that may have built up on some of the parts before and after they were assembled. The manual should have warned you about that.

I was born in a crossfire hurricane..........shooby dooby do
When I sold wood stoves, part of the install would be a small fire and informing the owners that it took a couple small ones to get the paint to cure up.
I am not familiar with gas logs, but that is probably what you are going through.
It should be mentioned in the owners manual

As it turns out, it was apparently a break-in thing. Left it running for several hours, and this morning it had largely de-stanked itself.
Also, the glass front on the box had all kinds of #### on it - not entirely sure what it was but I pulled it off and thoroughly cleaned & scraped it. REAL fun job, cleaning that summitch. But it worked - fired 'er up again, and only the slightest funk this time, and not for too long.
Thanks for the input.

Plastic protective sheet on the glass maybe?
They can't get your Goat if you don't tell them where it is hidden.
That shipping liner should have been removed bythe installer. That is what the stank of burning plastic was.I can't tell you how many times i go to visit somebody or go to do work in somebodies home and find that shipping liner plastic for scrath prevention is still there on some appliance that has been installed for 5-10 years

And then you go to remove it and it pulls the paint off.
If your view never changes you're following the wrong leader
Yeah, I'm guessing it's paint curing, manufacturing oils burning off, etc. It's always best to first run a new heating appliance on a warm day when you can open the windows.
Have you had a gas inspection? Usually the inspector turns the appliance on.I agree that the smell is probably only oil and or paint burning off. Get it properly inspected to make sure.

Is the new gas log "vented" or "ventless"?........Iron Helix
