Fix squeaky pine floor when there is no subfloor

A 1905 Victorian. The floors are 2.5″ strip pine floors. Nothing fancy. The first floor is laid over diagonally-oriented T&G subfloor. The 2nd floor, oddly enough, is just laid over the floor joists. I’ve verified this by examination of 2 locations, one during some rewiring and in a spot where we ran a utility chase.
The floor squeaks. Charming, but a bit too much. Where the squeak is near a joist I put a McPhearson’s Squeak-no-More pre-scored finish screw into the joist, which breaks off below the top of the plank.
There are spots where two adjacent boards move against each other and squeak between joists. Can someone recommend a solution? I tried taking a 16 g finish nailer and putting 1″ nails across the joint to stitch the two boards together. The nail enters the floor at about 30 degrees, exiting one board at about the mid-point of thickness, continuing into the adjacent board. This doesn’t work that reliably.
If anyone is aware of a solution that can be implimented from the top, it would be welcome. Perhaps there is a special ring shank nail for a pneumatic nailer, or a very small finish screw that can be applied at the junction of two adjacent planks.

How thick is this flooring?
.
The old traditional fix for that was talcum powder. You have to re-apply it every couple of months, but it supposedly works.
Otherwise I'd consider some sort of glue.
Second vote....
for talcum powder.
If ya can't make it stop moving, make it move quietly. Talcum will do it.
