To all:
I am planning on re-roofing my brother’s house in Iowa this spring. My question is about valley flashing. He has open metal valleys with three-tab comp. Shingles. He is thinking that we can just re-roof over the existing comp. as there is only one layer so far.
I know this is possible with an all comp roof, but what about with metal valleys? Will the whole roof need to be torn off to facilitate the new roof installation? Can new valley metal be installed over the old metal and shingles? Also, there is a ridge vent system. Can it be re-used? What are all the options?
Thanks for any and all replies.

The answer is, it depends.
On how bad the shingles are now.
On what kind of valley metal it is and what shape it's in.
On how much experience you guys have got and whether yopu know what to watch out for.
Best bet is shingle over the open metal valley with woven or lapped style valley, allowing the metal to act as a backup.
Ridge vent is probably a loss to mess with. Jetisson it and get a new one.

Actually, from the pix my bro sent me, I can't see the real need to re-roof now. No leaks, and looks okay from the pictures. I can't tell from the pix if the valley metal has a ridge in the middle or not. That would probably not be good to roof over, don't you think? If that is the case, what would you suggest? As far as experience goes, I'm a bit experienced in roofing, but not a roofer by trade. The roofs I have done have all been leak-free though. Sort of a jack of all, but try to specialize in wood butchery! My brother is a College prof. Thanks for the info.
Thought this was gonna be about plumber's crackzzzzzzzzz.
