I’m about to install vinyl. The old siding will be removed and new felt will be installed if needed. On the back of the house there is a gable with no eave at the roofline. My plan is to run 1×6 subfascia under the existing dripedge and covering it with aluminum fascia. Then I will run undersill trim up next to it. Since the joint between the undersill and fascia is high and exposed to wind rain etc, I’m assuming that I’ll need to flash it or run a dripedge from underneath the subfascia and out over the undersill trim. Am I correct on this?
Also, there is a 4″ eave between the bottom off this gable and the wall underneath. I’ll run a starter strip at the bottom of the gable for the siding and then channel and soffit the eave. My other question is how to flash and waterproof this area correctly. Again I’m assuming that one would wrap the bottom of the gable with flashing and make sure the bottom of the siding is lower than the soffit to create a drip edge. I don’t want to miss out on any tricks so any input would be appreciated.

A picture or drawing would help in understanding your problem
Ok, I'll get one and repost. Thanks.
That is good. Hard to understand from the text what you have now. There are many variations and you write as though assuming we see what you see.

Here is the photo of the gable. The gable siding will be removed down to framing with OSB and felt applied

After seeing your picture.
The "subfascia" you refer to is a "Rake Board" and the Alum.Wrap is fine. I believe I see a Shingle mould as well as drip edge along the rake, so I am not sure why yu feel the need to add a Rake board. But thats your call, the Jchannel for the siding ought to be able to be tucked under the shingle moulding.
As fas the bottom goes, use a fascia ( 6" tall alum with a bottom lip) to catch the little soffit edge, leave it hang down a 1/2" from the nailing surface ( the thickness of the soffit).
At the top of that fasicia that will be behind the staterstrip and siding, run the tyvek or whathave you over that alum, and that alum may as well be taped to the sheathing first.
That is the way I'd handle it.
