Flashing wood window w/o nailing flange
First some background info:
Location Oakland CA. (mostly dry)
Existing construction: Wood frame, felt paper cedar siding. (no sheathing)
My job: Tear off everything to studs and redo it right.
So far I have added 1/2″ CDX sheathing to the outside and intend to wrap the house in 15# felt paper. I salvaged some old doors and casement windows, reglazed, patched and primed them and had a local fabricator make up some wood frames. My dilemma is how to flash the windows.
I’ve read FHB and a few other postings on breaktime. It seems that most readers agree to put the self adhering flashing over the house wrap but they all refer to windows with nailing flanges, something my windows don’t have. Below is my solution and I’d love some comments as to whether I’m making a mistake or if this is overkill.
1) Install a pre-fab sill, www.jamsill.com 2) install 9″ wide self adhering flashing up sides 3) install the 15# felt, making sure the sill pokes through 4) install the window with shims on top of pan and shims on the sides, nailing the through the jambs, not the top or bottom 5) then reflash the sides, this time bridging the gap between the window frame and the r.o. 6) install a strip of window flashing across the head 7) continue my 15# felt above. 8) Trim out the window and place a metal flashing to extend across the wood trim above 9) install new siding.
Any comments would be appreciated. I plan to be doing this to the entire house so I’d like to get it right the first time.

I'm not sure I understand a few of your procedures, but here's how i set a wood window.
1- like yours, some kind of pan. I happen to use Grace Vycor to form my own. I sometimes slope the sill under the Vycor, but not always.
2- 6" (usually) or 9" Vycor on the sheathing alomg the sides of the RO, up past the window head.
3- Set the window with the side and head exterior casings already on. Level and shim. I generally only shim the bottom. I nail the window thru the casings/Vycor/sheathing to the liner studs. !0d cement coated nails work well for this.
4- Install PRIMED wood drip cap on window head casing. You can do this before installing the window, too.
5- Install metal drip cap. Nail to sheathing, not wood drip.
6- Install another piece of Vycor to cover metal drip cap, above the window.
I'm probably forgetting something, but this should help.
Oh yeah, the felt should lap under the sill Vycor, doesn't have to go behind the window casings, and go over the head Vycor.
