We are in the midst of my renovation and there is a 5’6″ wide section of flat roof above the 1st floor of my house that will act sort of like a patio for the rooms adjacent to it (The house bumped out down below but stopped at the 1st story).
The framers mentioned a product called Dibiden (sp?) that is applied w/ heat to make this roof area water tight and also give the ability to walk on it afterward soft of like a floor.
The siding guy mentioned another product but didn’t know too much about it that wasn’t applied w/ heat.
Anyone here have any experience w/ this kind of stuff? Any recommendations? This section of roof happens to be above the new shop so I cannot stress the importance of this roof being right…=)
Thanks!

You may get a few different options suggested here. Some will say to use a membrane roof and just walk on that. Some will say use a membrane roof under a wood deck surface. I think though, your membrane roof warranty becomes void when you start using it as a patio by placing furniture or a deck on it. The deck would have to be above and not in contact with the membrane.
The product I like to spec for these type of situations is Dex-O-Tex, manufactured by Crossfields Products Corp. It's an trowel applied elastomeric surface. It comes in colors, is non-slip, and expands and contracts with temperture fluctuations. It can be appied over plywood, concrete, etc.
The dibuten is a modified bitumen torch down single ply roof product. It is quiet tough.
But it is ver ugly on a roof deck.
It is also dangerous to apply and difficult to work to a wall flshing and have adecent looking job. I do not think of it as appropriate for residential use.
I prefer an EPDM rubber roof membrane, which is glued down with contact cement and associated flashings. If you want to use the advanced search feature here, using keywords EPDM and IPE`, you will see several photos and threads on decks done in similar situations.
