If the fireplace is working properly, you shouldn't have to worry about heat and/or smoke damage to the wall (or a TV) above it. Does the wall currently show signs of such? If so, somebody should check out the fireplace.
That said, above fireplaces is generally not a good place for TVs since it places them too high to be viewed comfortably for more than a few minutes. This has been discussed here before, so you may wanna do a search and check it out.

If the fireplace works right, smoke should be no concern.
these flat screens do make a lot of heat tho, on their own and require decent ventilation around them.
There have been other threads on the subject here. I suggest you try thed advanced search using keywords TV + fireplace

I've done a few and they've been fine. I like to recess them into the wall, leaving plenty of ventilation space around the tv, and mount the tv on an arm that lets you tip it down for a better viewing angle.

mine is above the fireplace,it does pick up some heat but doesn't seem to be alot.BUT.... i would never do it again ,with it up that high it picks up reflections from windows and even lights that are hanging from the ceiling.mine is not a plasma with a glass front[i can't imagine how bad it would be] but a lcd with a matte finish screen. looked good on paper, but to tell you how bad it is ,i go downstairs and watch the old tube tv and enjoy it much more.larry
if a man speaks in the forest, and there's not a woman to hear him,is he still wrong?
I had a 40" LCD over my fireplace insert and removed it. The insert puts out so much heat, I was afraid the TV gets damaged. As far as I know, heat damages electronics.
On the pic you can still see the mounting holes in the brick from the TV wall mount.
