Hi,
I recently saw a floor finish which looked like a smooth concrete finish. There was no visible aggreate. The floor had been incised with scores about 1/8″ wide and 1/8″ deep to give a 3’x3′ checker board appearance. This floor covering was put down on a sub floor supported on regular joists.
Can any one help me identify this floor finish and explain why it is incised the way it is.
Thanks,

i have seen a upper story floor done with cement over plywood subfloor. i was told it was an experiment. they screwed down hardie backer board, then covered it with a think mix of cement without aggregate. they finished it nicely, then scored on the joint lines of the backer board. they feared it would flex and break, but the scores would control or manage the breaks. they acid washed/stained it, and it looked great, and i never noticed any cracks
Thanks Davem,
I had computer problems right after I sent in my enquiry so I apologise for the delay
Since then I found out that it is a convention slab over fill etc. but no one seems to know why it was scored. Most likely to prevent cracking as you suggested.
