Hi,
I’m going to be installing Douglas Fir 5/4 Tongue and Groove on our covered porch.
What would you folks recommend as far as nailing goes? I’m told the Pneumatic Floor nailers/staplers will only work with 3/4 T&G. So is it hand nailing (I have 750 Lineal ft. to do, or could I use a finish nailer with 2″ stainless steel nails.
I posted before about this, and was going to rent a floor nailer, but it looks like that’s not an option…
Thanks,
Dave in Rochester, NY

The Bostitch stapler has a changeable spacer for different thicknesses of floors. The standard one is for 3/4" flooring and I believe it is 3/16" thick, so it seems like should work with 5/4 flooring if you remove it. I will be able to check in a day or two if no one else chimes in.
Jesse,
Thanks for the reply...do you think 16 ga. 2" finish nails would work?
Best,
Dave
not enough head on the finish nail to hold the flooring down.
Espo,
My old Portanailer will work on 5/4. You can get stainless nails for it also.

My Primatech air flooring cleat nailer can accomodate up to 33/32" t&g flooring. Contact the Mfr'r for the correct shoe.

The last porch I did was 5/4 PT. It was recommended that I put it down with 6d ring shank framing nails hot dipped, shot above the grove, diagonal at 45*.
I did just that and had no problem whatsoever. The floor I took up had regular 1x and had been put down with cleats--it was holding pretty good too.

Hi,
Thanks for the info.
So you were obviously using a framing nailer with the ring shanks, right? I have a nice framing gun and I'd like to avoid the expense of buying or renting (40.00 per day).
Maybe I'm thinking about this too much though...I could just rent...
Thanks,
Dave
Handymanvan,
Almost forgot! Thanks for that link, I got some good pointers...
Can you think of any reason why the same nails you used for the 5/4 PT would not be a good idea for my 5/4 Doug Fir?
Thanks again!
Dave
None that I can think of, I thought that nail was too big and was skeptical but it worked like a champ. I am not 100% sure what I put down was pine, it has been about a year and in hindsight, I do not know what it was, but it was 5/4 (full one inch)and it was nice. The nails I used were 2 3/8, sunk and the next piece butted up tight. I just set the nailer to drive them deep. I was removing flooring held with proper flooring cleats, it just pulled up easy. Mine did not pull up easily.

.Nobody is as good as they seem, nobody is as bad as they seem either.
Hey thanks handymanvan!
I'm going to give it a try using my Bostitch Framer...I'll let you know how it goes.
Best,
Dave
