You can't stain over the poly because it won't soak in. If you want a darker color the easy way, scuff sand the existing poly and go over it with tinted poly. Heavy traffic areas will wear through over time. If you wan't something that will last, you have to sand to raw wood and start from scratch.

You might try the poly with stain. I think minwax's brand is called "Polyshade". If you are worried about durability you can overcoat with a floor varnish. Or, if an amber shellac will give you the tone you want, it dries hard in just a few minutes and doesn't smell. If you search on shellac.net you can find flakes of various tones that you dissolve in denatured alcohol, then strain and apply. I just did a bedroom last week with shellac. Looks great and was dry in minutes.
thanks- i will try the polyshades on a test area to see if i can get the color right
Just be sure to scuff sand before applying, if not on the sample area don't skip this step on the entire floor. If you don't scuff sand first, the new poly will flake off especially in traffic area.
Good luck with it, and let us know how it turns out. Inquiring minds will want to know! =)~ Ted W ~

Don't do it.
Even if you sand down to what looks like bare wood there still is some polly in the grain of the wood and the stain will come out looking uneven.
This has been talked about on here before. Complete with pictures.
