I’m planning on replacing my existing vinyl kitchen floor with ceramic tile. After pulling up the old floor, how do I remove the old glue residue. Or do I just need to knock down the high spots prior to laying the thin set.

A few products are made to remove flooring adhesive, that combined with a floor scraper and some time, you'll have it licked. Make sure the adhesive is all off for good contact adhesion with the tile and mortar/thinset. By the way what type of underlayment are you working with? Plywood? OSB? Concrete?
*And see this threadRich Beckman
*Norm, What is the underlayment that you are putting the tile over. Is it a concrete slab or perhaps a raised foundation(plywood/OSB). Need more info... If it is wood you could place hardibacker right over the existing floor.Depending on the condition of the underlayment. If it is concrete then thats another story.
*I rented a floor sander to remove the old adhesive, worked pretty good, had the sander back to the rental house in an hour.
*The underlayment is concrete with a multi-color (patchy light gray to a brown) floor leveler compound. The vinyl floor has been in place for over twelve years. I have pulled up only a small area of the floor, so I don't know what I will run into when the rest of the old stuff comes up. The floor will be replaced as part of new kitchen cabinet installation project.
