Sorry I didn't put these all in one post. I found these by searching Dogpile.

how does one inherit flying squirrels? are they pets? or just happen to live in the yard of a house you recently bought or inherited?
and while we're on the subject- does anybody know if such creatures live in western nc? one night last summer i swear i saw something of that general size and description glide past our deck (way too big for a moth, and definitely on a steep glide path- not actually flying like a big bat) but we never saw it again.

I had one as an occupant for half a day. Climbed to the top and swooped all the way across the LR, landed on the couch, and ran up the chimney.
i hope he didn't give meili any ideas!

Flying squirrels are actually wild and they glide. I guess way back when it looked close enough like flying that the name stuck. They've got a thin membrane of skin between their back and front legs. A permanently attached hangglider, if you like. I also know that they can be found in Wisconsin (a friend of mine has property up there and they are relatively common), dunno where else tho.
They are nocturnal, I believe. Don't know if they are actually in the same genus as "real" squirrels. I don't have them in my area, so maybe they only hang around less populated parts of the country? This jobless recovery has done more to promote the consumption of exquisite chocolate than the finest chocolatier. i'm quite familiar with the concept of flying vs gliding in mammals- bats being the only ones capable of true flight. i have a bachelors degree in epo (environmental, population and organismic- or we called it, orgasmic) biology from cu-boulder. while it doesn't exactly qualify me to practice medicine, i do have at least a solid "jeopardy" level understanding of the basics. (but perhaps your comments were educational for others)
what i wanted to know is if they're indigenous to this area, and apparently they are.
btw- i understand it is not at all unusual to keep them as pets- that's why i asked bud about it.

mitch my g/f takes in all kinds of hurt animals, just had a bald eagle with a broken wing for a few weeks.shes a hairdresser so all the older women bring her these critters.well yesterday someone brought the flying squirrel,i usually dont pay alot of attention to the animals but this guys pretty cute.spent alot of the evening in the pocket of my t shirt.just kinda trying to find out some stuff about them -whether you can keep them in captivity etc.thanks for the links, couldnt find any last night.hes about two inches long right now without the tail so have no idea on age or any of that
I know they're very cute and if you have to have a rodent in the house (yes, they are rodents), they're the ones to have. I read a story about a guy who had model airplanes hanging from his ceiling. When the squirrel moved into his house, it liked to sit in the pilot seats.
I didn't know that people actually kept flying squirrels as pets. Only thing I've heard of is sugar gliders as pets. Could you have seen an escaped sugar glider?
Darn, living in a populated area sure cuts down on the wildlife I get to see. Not to mention the whole North vs South and East vs West wildlife difference. You almost need to have acreage everywhere. We have skunks, racoons, bears, foxes and the occasional mtn lion in town here.
Our dog got skunked several times, so I asked a local sheriff's deputy what to do about skunks in town. He said flatly "I use a .410"
Yeah, it's town, but it's not urban.Any jackass can kick down a barn, but it takes a carpenter to build one.
What did you do with your bears and badgers???
Who ever invented work didn't know how to fish....
We give em a place to sleep, feed em ham n eggs and send em on their way. ; )Any jackass can kick down a barn, but it takes a carpenter to build one.

hmmm, the one i saw went zipping by too fast to tell if it was male or female, let alone at a pace that would have allowed close inspection of its baculum. maybe if i lit a few candles, put out a little wine, you know, set the mood, maybe they would be more cooperative.
