A thread about insulating around replacement windows brought up some points that I have never considered.
What is the most effective method to insulate? Spray foam which will expand to fill any voids or fg which can be packed in tightly?
Of course, let’s assume that the foam is installed properly and you don’t have consider the risk of bowing the jamb from too much foam.
I’ve always been partial to foam’s ability to creat a tight seal but some seem to feel that the seal may be compromised after a few expansion/contraction cycles.
What is your experience/preference?

The amount of area covered by the gap is so small that the conductive heat loss from so few square feet would be small. There is much more potential heat loss from air infiltration through the gap. Therefore, if fiberglass is used I'd lean toward packing it tightly. If I had my 'druthers though I would use low expansion latex foam, and not too much of it.
