Who’s the best in the NFL? Who’s the worst?
Got a favorite College coach?
My current favorite is Scotty Bowman (hey, shut up…we’re 18-3-1!. Give a lot of credit to Barry Smith though…Dave Lewis too.
My all time favorite is Don Schula and I have a spot in my heart for the General, even though I think he’s too nutty sometime.
I loved the Bo and Woody era. Too bad Woody lost his mind after another loss to Michigan!

The worst? Who's coaching Detroit right now? Actually, you could line up a pretty good batch of crappy coaches just by getting everyone that has coached the Lions over the past twenty years or so. Man, has there ever been a team that so consistently played below it's talent level?
It is very difficult to judge coaches. Did the team win because of the coach? Or was there so much talent, how could they lose?
I finally decided that Parcells (sp) definitely knows how to coach.

*I used to like Madden but now John (Chuckie) Gruden is the bomb.
*Ironically Rich, I thing Morningweg is actually a pretty decent coach. The lions remember are the creation of Bobby Ross. Marty just canned one of Ross's 1st round draft pics (Aaron Gibson). Our entire offensive line has been juggled, the team is playing with 3rd stringers everywhere. In fact, they had to send out the 3rd string qb to play wide receiver for the last few plays in the loss to Arizona because we have so many injuries. Despite the 0-9 start, I'm more upbeat about the Lions than I have been in 20 years! They lead the league in close game losses and actually have had a legitimate shot at winning 7 of their losses. That's a marked change from previous years.I'm willing to give Marty a few more years.blue
*Who's Gruden and what's his strength?blue
*John Gruden is the head coach of the Oakland raiders. He is the youngest coach in NFL history and he's the same age as his QB and a year older than Jerry Rice. his father uncles and brothers are all football coaches or scouts for various college and NFL teams. In 4 years look at the people he picked up and turned the team around. even Al Davis dont interfere with him. That was part of his negociations to coach that team in fact he had the job and that was the only negociation that he will pick his players , coaches and call his own plays. i think the world of the man. he's got such a great sense of humour and winning personality. The players and coaches love him. and the fans equally love him also.
*blue, I am not a big football fan,but I got to admidt I have enjoyed seeing the Browns coach embarrass the superbowl defending Modells twice this year.In fact the Browns could have easily been 7-2 right now and on top of their division( except for 2 back to back ot losses)BTW, I took some young distance runners to a USATF regional Cross Country meet in Detroit on Saturday.Detroit looks pretty good from Belle Isle park in the middle of the river----not so good up close.Come on down to Akron and watch the best high school basketball player in the nation(Lebron James) and the #2 Highschool team in the nation( St. Vincent-St. Mary). these kids are so good, they play a national schedule, all their home games are now in a college arena and this year we had to buy season tickets.I love seeing a team run a full court press the entire game ,and dive on the floor for loose balls, and make some outstanding passes.
*Wow, you were in DEEEE troit and survived?I haven't been to Belle Isle since I was a drunk teen at a party that I should have avoided. Detroit is rebounding and it will turn around. If you like speculating, buy some of that slum property now while it's cheap.I also love high school sports. I don't know why, I just do. I enjoyed the hell out of my years as a Soccer coach there but almost went broke doing it (the seasons end up being about 3 months and I could only work till noon).blue
*Ditto on Gruden. An ESPN survey of players showed Gruden to be the one most would like to play for. I'm amazed at the ability of guys like Larry Brown, Parcells, and Lou Holtz to win anywhere they go, no matter how bad it was beforehand (of course, that could be part of the secret--nowhere to go but up!). Shoot, Holtz turned a horrible Gamecocks team around in less than 2 years. And I'm amazed at the inability of guys who preceeded them to win, no matter what. And, of course, a tip of the hat to Joe Paterno for lifetime achievement.
*I like Paterno too. His lifetime accomplishments, with his friendly demeanor is special.I'm also a big Parcells guy. I wish Detroit would have sought him.blue
*Blue,Not too long ago, the Philly Daily News ran a feature about coaches from all sports/all eras. One feature was they asked current/past coaches from Philly who their role model coaches were, or which coach influenced them most. One of 'em was my high school football coach. As I was looking at it, I had the realization that I was reading about my most influential coach talk about his most influential coach. Great to see Strath Haven's Kevin Clancy doing so well, he's won a couple of state championships since moving on to another school. As for the NFL, while I like what Reid is doing with the Eagles (read:winning), I still tend to think of him as a bit of a schmuck. I like Gruden, and another former Iggles coordinator, Jeff Fisher. It's law around here that you have to like Vermiel, too. He's a genuine great guy, so it's hard not to. I also like watching Bill Cowher on the sidelines, because he has the best facial expressions, whether he's mad or happy, he's just intense.Long live JoePa.
*The best? Well, I'm old enough to be part of the Lombardi era, and a Packer fan since then. So, he gets my vote.Second would be Chuck Noll because he put together the best teams to ever play-and consistently scored big in the draft despite having crappy picks each year. The worst is Forrest Gregg, by far. He was the dumbest fool ever to be a head coach. The next worst is a tie between Bart Starr, Lindy Infante and Ray Rhodes, who took a great team to below mediocrity in one season.
*I think I'd include Barry Switzer in the worst column. Just say "4th and 1" and "Switzer" in the same sentence, and you'll make any Iggles fan smile.Kotite was no genius, either.
*I'm quite sure that Detroit has a monopoly on worst coaches. We've had some real jokers here. I'm also a fan of Lombardi even though he didn't utter that awful line. The line he uttered was much more eloquent.blue
