I am designing a footing for a deck that is near a lake. The water table is nearly 2′ down from grade. I propose 2’x2’x2′ of crushed stone buried into the soil with a spread footing above. Any suggestions on this design. I am aware that it will not go to the frostline, but will the water table ever freeze? The site is located in western Mass. where the temperature is fairly cold in the winter.

I wouldn't even think of putting in a footing that didn't go to the frostline.
