Dumb question here
I need to install a footing for a column to carry the structural beam for a garage. What is the elevation of the 2’x2′ footing for the column?
The perimeter foundation wall is 5′ tall with footing.
Is excavation done down to the same elevation of the perimeter wall footings (5′ down) then a 2’x2′ pad done with a sono tube on top?
Thanks.

What do the engineer's drawings show?
It only shows the details for the footing and ICF forms.
Nothing on the column. I have gone thru a lot of FHB and JLC articles and the code book lookin for the answer. Since the garage is not officially heated I am guessing that the support for the column must go below frost line even though it is inside the garage.
Why don't you just call the engineer who drew them and ask him since he forghot to put it in and you paid for it?
I hate replies like this.
First off I am a carpenter who spent much of my career in high tech industry in medical/computer labs. Well that work is gone to China so now I do small remodel/fix it stuff and make a decent living at it. That said. You try to do an addition on your own home on carpenters wages in this economy. You try to save where you can. I hired an online firm to do my drawings/plans and am very very happy with what I got for $400 (that includes a bonus I gave him) but, He is in CA and I in MA so getting any more from him is tough.
My town recently lost our building inspector. We have been sharing an inspector from another town. Make it worse....my town is in the process of switching towns/inspectors with whom we share. So needless to say it was very tough to get an answer from a part time inspector who's last day was yesterday.
I have a supervisors license but, I dont know everything (a rarity in the construction industry) So I turn to the online community for some advice. JLC and FHB are my bible for construction so I went here first. And this is the best you guys can do? Come on dont you think I looked at the prints? Dont you think I emailed the guy who drew the plans (I got what I paid for and more and am happy with it).
I did finally reach my inspector on his last day. The answer to the question is that the footing can be 12"x30" on grade.
While this may seem obvious to many, my excavator, a few construction friends and myself all had different views
Next time I am up late at night and need a question answered I will try contractortalk.com
You aren't going to have any friends
Let's see.... you had three responses to your inquiry (in which you hadn't told the entire story) and got three different opinions. None of them being substantive, as in, "Do it this way..." So you dismiss the entire FHB forum and will take your questions elsewhere. Treating the forum just as, I assume, your excavator, a few construction friends, and yourself. You are headed for a lonely life.
My appologies to you Sapwood. No offense to you. You said it yourself nothing substantive in my resposes.
My appologies to the entire forum as I am sure there are many who would be able to help out. I rarely post questions but research quite a bit. I can never understand why someone comes back with "well did you read the directions" comment.
I have used Greenbuildingtalk.com forum quite a bit and resposes are very good and quick. I find that many people do not read an entire post so I leave out many details which may not be immediate to the question.....such as my backround or building inspector status.
As for the opionions which I already had 1 was different, 2 same and 1 "have no idea". Who would you turn to at that point?
Keep in mind that your description was insufficient to give anyone a good picture of the situation. And your question did not have a quick stock answer that didn't require understanding the situation fairly well. I would not, under those cirumstances, have expected anyone to provide any sort of authoritative answer (other than "talk to your engineer").
Seems to me you're being pretty demanding for someone who's asking for free advice.
Come-on!
Come-on Dan,
His question was very complete. What the heck were you looking for? The question is, do footers on the interior under an unheated slab need to be below the frost line or not? Gee Wee. I agree with the poster! Some people here hangrague the heck out of people. I have no idea what the game is or what the enjoyment is for them, but they do it. It is as if they think you need a Phd in paper products to wipe your ARS. Good greif!
That said I love this board and most of the people here, and then there are the ......
Do right
This forum is what it is. Harangue and incomplete explanations. No changing, just deal with it. What good comes out of the conversation is a bonus.
It can equally be said that some people's skin is so thin I'm surprised it holds anything in. Taunton has shown time and time again what this thing is to them-mostly a waste of time, a way to advertise their wares (poor marketing on this site I think), and a meager source of income.
There's been countless messages of future putzing with the software and you see where that got us. One year anniversary of showing us how to post pictures (sort of), the search function that does seem to work, and the ever popular improvement to the naughty word filter. And a tip of the hat to that first major tweaking, the POST button aptly named POST.
Best of luck.
Agreed.
And apparantly it is a place for lonely people to be nasty or pain in the backsides. Deal with it and pity them.
" apparently it is a place for lonely people "
That's a bogus way to think of it and a crappy way to encourage those with the brains and experience to continue posting answers to these nefarious questions.
Still see there's a bumch of whining on this site.....this is why this site has gone down hill......
