Forgotten Coupon

mrfixitusa | Posted in General Discussion on September 3, 2008 04:27am

I did it again

I bought some items at Home Depot and I FORGOT TO USE MY 10% OFF COUPON

I have my receipt

Will they let me go back a week later and take the coupon in and ask for the discount?

I was just wondering if any one has tried this and had any success

as long as the coupon isn't expired yet, they will still give the discount. They used to give it even if the coupon was expired but now it is all up to the computer system.

Did the same thing. My coupon was a day late...told the guy at the counter he will have to except it or i walk (many small items in basket and a 200 dollar drill) He made a call hung the phone up and said "sorry" i walked. stinky

Thanks for sharing your story Stinkywhat I'm going to do is look and see who is working at customer service before I approach themFor example, there is one employee whom I have not seen her smile in the two years she has worked there.Other employees do smile and one woman was very helpful to me when my home depot credit card got demagnetizedShe smiles and seems to be a normal happy personI'll report back my findingsStinky, do you think you would have better luck if you try it with one of the friendly employees at your home depot?

      1. stinky | Sep 04, 2008 02:11am | #9

Mrfixitusa, I probably would have received better results being more patient and asking for the right person..but they see my face in their store almost daily, I pay cash and never ask anything of them. That basket that they had to reinventory had over 500 bucks in it. And it was small cabinetry hardware and I believe a drill with bits. Certainly a strange way of doing business. They have studied the us airline industry business model very well. stinky

i'm laughing my as off! i know who your talking about! long story but, went in there 2 weeks ago with a defective tool that was 45 days old,she told me to hit the highway,so i said get the manager down here.

when he showed up,i walked over threw the tool in the trash can and went off on a 7 minute tantrum, including my opinon of the lady, with her standing there. he kept telling me to just go get another tool, told him i didn't want the piece of krap. and walked out! he caught me in the lot and gave me a cash refund. i really wanted to see her fired ,but shes still there! good luck.

oh tell em if they won't give you credit you will use it over at lowes ,they'll take it. i get along fine about 95% of the time with big boxes, but about once evry 3 months i go postal.  larry

Thanks for that story LarryIt helps me to start the day off with a nice laugh lolSorry to hear about your recent "challenges" at HD and the problems with the piece of #### tools we all buy from time to time.I guess to be honest when I walk in the door I try to not have my hopes up that anyone is going to help me and that way I'm not disappointed.I try to be friendly to the employees at Home Depot and it does help and pay dividends. There are people at "our" home depot that I really enjoy working with. One of the things I have done is I call Home Depot management and tell them a "success story" whenever an employee has been very helpful.I call the store manager and describe what I was doing and tell how the employee helped me.My understanding is the employee then gets some kind of gift from Home Depot.I think it's a $25 bonus in their paycheck or maybe a gift certificate to a restaurant

    2. mrfixitusa | Sep 04, 2008 12:45am | #8

I walked into home depot and breathed a sigh of relief as I recognized the woman at the returns deskI asked her about using the coupon and she said "I don't know I'll have to call a store manager"So she called the store manager and the manager came walking over.I recognized the "store manager" It was the 19 year old girl who has been working in the paint dept for about a year She has been with home depot for a year nowSo that makes her an employee with a lot of seniority and she has moved into a "store manager position".We asked her if we could use the coupon and she said "sure why not"

    3. rez | Sep 04, 2008 03:38am | #10

You did good walking. If more would do the same someone might take notice. But that's just me, sometimes I just love the challenge.

You know yer good if you can get Walmart to work a deal.

Since I have a truck the other day I was asked to help pickup a tv for a friend at a wallyworld. One of the curses of having a truck.

We got there and found out she was planning on buying two tv's, one for the living room and a smaller one for the bedroom. Some dames...

Anyhow, buying two there's gotta be a price break so I had to toss a line out to the clerk and got the stereotype 'can't do it' statement. My mistake for not finding a manager with some clout.

Been in Walmart's before and if you get a manager sometimes you can wheel and deal. Got a couple nice boomboxes once that way a few years back.

So you're perturbed that they wouldn't take an invalid coupon?I was in Lowe's buying about $40 of stuff the other day. I had a coupon for $10/off and scanned it (I was in the self checkout aisle) and it said it accepted it. When I got my receipt, I did not get the $10 off. After asking a cashier, I had a "doh!" moment when I realized it was for a purchase of $50 or more.Should I have demanded that they honor my coupon?

You should have gone over and gotten $10 worth of Lenox sawzall blades to add to the total so they would be free.

      2. stinky | Sep 04, 2008 01:29pm | #14

Not really perturbed but somewhat surprised. I had many small items in the basket that needed a employee to restock. maybe a 45 min. job? At their current payscale would it not be in their best interest to honor the day old coupon? I never demand anything from lowes. But they know that those baskets full of widgets are real mo-fos to re-shelf. stinky

Some of these coupons are only good for three daysThe coupon comes in the mail two weeks in advanceHow can anyone keep up with these datesMaybe hire a secretary?

          1. MSLiechty | Sep 04, 2008 09:27pm | #18

I keep a stack of them in my truck. going today to get a couple 10' 2x4's and stakes maybe an axe to get to the $50.00 mark, for the $10 savings. I'm sure more will come in the mail next week. Seems we get about 4/ month.ML

Did the option to purchase the items at the listed price or restock them yourself ever come up?What if you operated a business and someone expected you to honor an invalid offer?

They had the chance to except my offer,(honor the day late coupon) or have one of their many salespeople restock all the widgets. They chose to restock the widgets. My customers do ask for freebies...small ones sometimes and we do honor them. I would love to see how a regional store manager would have handled my situation. stinky

I had gotten a 10% off coupon, but I was a day early at Home Depot.  Slightly embarrassed, I told the clerk I'd just come back tomorrow.  Man, I hated to do that because I'd found some marked down metal electrical boxes that have a full 1" of in and out movement after they are installed.  They were $3.60, but marked down to less than $1.50 each........

She smiled said, "With gas as high as it is, you don't need to drive back again.  Let's see if I can get through today".  She did and I was a happy fellow and pleasantly surprised . ;>)

Made me want to come back and get more things, you know?

Some of the HD people do try to help the customer like you've described.I wish they all were that way
