While sealing my attic I came upon a space on the level below that is about 1 foot by 3 feet and is enclosed with drywall. The furnace flue runs through here but I was wondering if, after providing proper clearance, I might be able to build a cabinet in there for books or linens. I would just go between the studs, insert a cabinet, and trim it out. What do you think?

We call it a chase. Every house I build has at least one. Normally though, they are stuffed with ducts and other such stuff.
Our flue was hidden behind a (shallow) cabinet. When I took out the flue there were still some wires and other junk there, so I was only able to reclaim about half the space.
