What is the “protection board” used against foundations to protect the waterproofing from being nicked during back fill. Do I just use regular pink insulating foam board? Asked at the local big box and they didn’t know what I was talking about.

If you want insulation there it'd work. We use scrap carpet.
PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
Depending on where you are located, insulation on the outside of your basement walls is a very good idea. Here in the Midwest I believe that it is a code requirement in new construction. Use rigid foam board. You may want to check out this article "Keeping a Basement Dry" in the June/July 2001 issue of FH.
Foundation Protection
The material is XPS polystyrene board. It's used to protect the foundation during backfilling & also provides added insulation value.

Just a heads up. Some of these posts are pretty dated. Tho responses to them are timeless, the original inquirer probably won't see it.
That's EPS
Expanded polystyrene AKA bead board. R-control is the big brand. It is treated with borate so ants don't eat it.
