I have an odd problem on a home we remodeled last year. We had a frameless shower enclosure installed in a new marble shower stall. The wall surface is 12 X 12 white Carrera marble installed over cement backer board. Our door installer hung the heavy glass door on the two supplied hinges. The hinges are attached directly to the face of the marble with two stainless screws run into the blocking behind the backerboard. The door installer claims that he squirted clear silicone caulk into each screw hole before he ran in the screws. We are now seeing a brown stain in the marble around each one of the hinges. The stains are about 6″ in diameter and seem to come from the back of the marble. We had a similar problem on the tub deck which was the same marble in 1″ slab material. The tub deck also acts as a shower seat for about 12″, and we found an open grout joint allowed the direct flow of water to enter into the marble base causing brown staining. I’m having a really hard time believing that indirect water splashing could somehow get into 4 sealed screw holes from the hinges and cause such stains. The top hinge stain really has me baffled. Perhaps the homeowner’s 6’6″ height adds to the problem. Has anyone ever seen something like this ?

What fasteners hold the cement board on? If water is working its way behind the marble it could be rusting the fasteners wich the marble in turn is abosorbing thus showing a stain.
*Are you sure the screws are stainless? Have you backed one out to check for the silicone? If not - do it. Could be picking up bleed from penetrating the felt behind the backerboard. Is there any sort of gasket material between the hinge and the marble? Did somebody oil the hinges?
