Does anyone have any experience on framing a barrel vault ceiling? The ceiling will stretch across a kitchen and breakfast area, and the span is 18′-6″. I have framed a smaller barrel vault before by using sloped 2″x12″ joists and “cutting” the curve out of the extra thickness. This longer span won’t allow me to do reuse that method. The ceiling will be finished with 3/4″ t&g oak. Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Here's a link to the theoretical Math to Frame a Cross Vault I contributed in the JLC Forums. This is a link to the entire Where can I find info on framing a groin vault? thread. Hope this helps.
Papabambam: I should have read your post more carefully. I don't think you will find my links too helpful ... you're after information on framing a barrel vault.Joe Bartok
You can still cut the radius from 2x12 stock or less, then gusset the segmented parts together like truss construction. The arched cut outs fit nicely on top of the rafter parts for added strength. It looks cool too. Be sure to take a picture.
