Is this the best way to put in a 2′ overhand on the gable ends of a house. Order the end wall truss 2&1/2″ shorter than the other trusses then run the overhang 2X4 out 2′ and in the house 2′ so you can then end nail it onto the second truss and it will sit on top of the end wall truss?
If not how should I do it?

The drop should be 3 1/2 inch. I,ve used that method on truss roofs, but I also use 2x4 simpson joist ties on the common truss. Be sure to order your end trusses as cable end type. Others here will probably have different methods. luck

*Dave's suggestion about dropping the top chord 3.5" is probably the best. It will work under almost all conditions. The only drawback is that it uses quite a bit of labor and material to frame all the ladders. The only other method I could think of would be to order full height gables, then notch the top chord 1.5" deep and run lookouts back to the first truss. This works well on shorter overhangs. I'm not sure I'd try it on a 2' wide overhang though.
*Ron, I've always used your method and it will work on a 2' overhang. The amount of sag in the overhang is actually quite minimal and a few well placed lookouts notched in will usually carry the load. I'm assuming that the (2x4) subfascia has blocks at 2' intervals and the sheathing is well nailed. A 2x6 subfascia needs even less support. After taking all things into consideration, the projected gable rafter is surprisinly stiff. As a precautuin on 24" overhangs, I take care to properly cantilever the plywood sheathing and avoid pieces that break on the gable. In the event of failure, the fix is quite easy too, but I've never seen one fail.blue
*our gable trusses come the depth of the common top chord lower ( usually 4" ). Our outriggers then run from the the last common out over the the top of the gable truss top chord, ( typically 2' ). We run blocking perpindiclur to the outriggers up the gable truss top chord, ( these act as spacers and stabilize.) Metal strap the top of the outrigger back over the edge of the common for strength..( you guys won't have to do that as you sheath and that will tie it all together.
