Framing: Square vs. Plumb vs. Level
I realize that square, plumb, and level are all important to good framing. However, do any one of these virtues tend to require more careful attention than the others?
Just wondering.

Put something square on something level and you'll automatically have something that happens to be plumb too.
I think it's somebodies theorem.

Sidebar your honor: If you're at all interested... Schilling will be making a rehab start in Toledo in six days I believe.
And your theorem is correct sir. I've yet to see the proof though. ;)View Image
Check my thinking on this. Monday-23rd July. Your starting pitcher-Julian Tavarez?
Joyce and I will be 10 rows up, just to the umpires right. Doing the math it'll be Westbrook on the mound for the Tribe. Brian, these seats are in front of the visiting scouts. Makes you feel like the president of GM.............well, maybe sony.
The Hens entertain Pawtucket the 24th thru 27th.
Just put a nice kitchen splash in one of the Hens front office personel today. Not knowing Schilling very well, should we secure seating behind the plate or perhaps down the line. Watching the Big Unit from behind the plate was a beautiful thing. Some of those sinker ballers, even with first is a treat.
I'll try to check the matchups in the paper, but a heads up if you know the day, will be much appreciated.
Thanks.
We might want to take this to the judges chambers.

If the Red Sox website is accurate (and it usually is) then Schilling will throw a bullpen side session on Wednesday and then make his first rehab start in Pawtucket on Saturday.....5 days later he'll throw again in Toledo. So what's that....a week from Thursday? I'd sit behind the plate any chance I can get bro. That's just an amazing perspective to watch a game from.View Image
The reformed felon that got me started in this business has 4 for 5 games-9 rows up end of the dugout. We'll be sitting in the other 4. I've parked my butt in every location there, cept for those field level (sunken) cell phone waving boxes. 3rd and home are my favorites. Former catcher, love it behind the dish.
Damn Thursday is golf league, might have to skip the 19th hole.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

does that mean you can't frame: a square wall, or a level deck???
:o).

I just screw 'em both up in equal amounts and nobody notices. ;)View Image
A buddy and I always said " square, plumb, level, AND flat, Aim for 3 outta 4". LOL
It's kinda like good, fast, and cheap.
Never thought about it, but if you don't start with a floor that is level, it is almost impossible to build the rest of the place square and plumb.
You want sub-contractors who are on the level so treat them squarely. Don't listen to these other guys. They are just plumb silly

You're right. I should play it straight and keep the discussion strictly upright. Otherwise I could get worked into a corner and have to escape vertically.

You forgot straight. But don't worry, so did the rest of these experts. ;-)
You got that right. There isn't a straight line in the whole thread.

That is 'cause ex spurts travel in a trajectory, not a straight line...

I dunno --- I think he's a half a bubble off.

You forgot straight. Dont ask, Dont tell, like in the military
Just for the hell of it, I thought I'd actually answer the OP. Ya know, just being crazy!
Obviously, we would all like to be square, plumb and level. You can be out of square and still be plumb and level. This would require some cheating at the roof, with trusses, rafters are another story. Someone mentioned flat, if you have to cheat, keep it flat.
Basically, I shoot for all three and cheat as nessecary. If you are more than 1/2" out anywhere, you WILL find it later. The closer you are, the less cheating for everyone who follows you.
If you're framing a house, a little time spent coming off the foundation, saves alot of time later. With all the lasors available now, its fairly easy to start level. Staying that way is just good building practices, ie bracing, a good level etc.
I should add that, no matter how hard you try, nothing ever ends up perfect.
No, you're not allowed to actually answer the OP's question until the 40th post.

How stupid of me!!!
Now what?? will SYSOP reprimand me?
Do I have to talk about Bosox pitching? Cause I don't give a rats pitoot, thier 10 games up and the Jays are tanking.
How about this;
Speaking of plumb, level and square, I've got this growth...............If you didn't have time to do it right the first time, how come you've got time to do it over again?
Well, we'll let it go this time, just be careful from now on.

Thanks. I wasn't sure what the accepted practice was on such questions.
Would it be cheating to tell him that he should go work on a framing crew, if he really wants to learn how to apply the principles he mentioned? Or is he supposed to infer that from the oblique angle of the responses received so far?
No, you tell him that what he'd doing is far too dangerous and he needs to hire a pro. And somewhere we need to discuss whether code actually requires that things be square, plumb, and level.

Gotcha. That thing about the code...never saw anything in there myself about any of the those things.

I've always thought that Fluke instruments should have something similar -- If it works it's a Fluke.

Right. Or...if it makes good music, it's a Fluke
I don't think many of their instruments make music.

I was asking a serious question that I believed worthy of serious discussion. After all, construction is the primary theme here.
To those who respected that intent, I thank you. And to those who didn't...

Awww, don't go away mad. I gave you the best real answer, a couple of posts back.
Here it is again: If you really want to learn how to apply the principles you mentioned...plus straight, an equally important one that you missed...go find a job working as an apprentice carpenter on a framing crew.
"Awww, don't go away mad."
Not to worry. I got thick skin. Matches my thick skull.
"I gave you the best real answer, a couple of posts back. Here it is again: If you really want to learn how to apply the principles you mentioned...plus straight, an equally important one that you missed..."
Moot point. In this context, "straight" refers to deviation. Materials can deviate in straightness - along the run - at least to some degree - and still be squared, plumbed or leveled end to end.
"go find a job working as an apprentice carpenter on a framing crew."
I'm already an apprentice carpenter. Been one for over 30 years now.

Square is most important for the foundation.
Level is most important for the floor.
Plumb is most important for the walls.
Then your house will be square, level, and plumb.
