Happy Friday,
I’m starting a frame on frost protected slab type foundation monday. The plans are slim on details. I’m looking for suggestions on the detail where the wall/siding meets the vertcal foam insulation at the slab perimeter.
At this point, although the owners are not 100% sure, the siding likely will be either vinyl, or fiber cement claps. Walls are 2×6 w 1/2″ ply sheathing.
In my (limited) experiences looking at existing work w either ICFs or foam insulation on the foundation, I have yet to see a really slick job on this detail.
Sure would like to build something that doesn’t look like s&%$.
Many thanks, Harry

I built my house with a frost protected slab 8 years ago. The exterior stud walls
were kept in line with the concrete edge(allowing normal anchor bolts to be used)
and 7/16" sheathing was applied. I then made flashing out of white coil stock that
started 6" up the wall and was bent out and down over the 2" rigid XPS. I continued
the flashing down the foam to a below grade level and bent the bottom edge over
on itself and had it kick out at an angle to give some support/strength to the 8'
pieces of flashing. House wrap was brought down over the flashing and taped. I
then added 1" of XPS and strapped over it to create a rain screen wall. I did this
just a little off of level for board and batten wood siding. This method allowed the
boards to extended down over the flashing/XPS with about 1/4" between the back
of the boards and the metal. This looks very neat and clean when done. Good Luck!
Synthetic stucco over the foam seems to be what most people use. The walls should extend out far enough that the foam isn't sticking out like a sore thumb.
Beer was created so carpenters wouldn't rule the world.
Thanks for the ideas.Looks like one of the main considerations is to somehow get the siding out so the insulation doesn't look like a big bump.Harry
We hang our plates 2". I have yet to see a house with the protruding foam on the foundation that didn't look like h***.
