I want to frost the lites on a pocket door that sections off a toilet area. I want to see light but not the person using the john. Any ideas? I found a spray on glass frosting that actually looks great but you can scrape it off which I’m not keen on. Does anyone know of any chemical etchers? I realize grit blasting is an option but I’d rather do it at home and not take the door somewhere. Thanks in advance.

I was at a wood working supply shop. They sell templates and chemicals for etching glass.
The leaded glass shop does some etching so they might sell such a product.
*Craft stores sometimes have glass etching solution. As you can imagine, any chemical which eats through glass is quite dangerous. So, absolutely, positively wear rubber gloves as recommended, and don't handle brushes, rags, etc with bare hands. The solution rinses easily with water. It's not particularly harmful to breathe, but quite harmful if absorbed throught the skin.
*get some rubbing compound and a small square of glass. Put the compound on the glass to be etched and rub it with the smaller square of glass. Saw a friend do this when building his own camera. Works fast, no chemicals, highly controllable. If you get some friskit paper from an arts store and cut a design into it with an X-acto knife, you can do some nice patterns. Got a gift for christmas last year where the person had customized a glass vase using this technique.
*if the door is easy to take outside all u need is a small cup type sandblaser and small air supply... easy to etch designs i use shelf paper cut out design i want (you can cut thru a paper that has a design u like) it really is fast and easy... no snake oilpony
*What blast media do you use?
*Check out outwater.com, they've got some films that you can put on the glass for privacy.John
*1. Orbital sander (but not on tempered glass)2. $10 "sandblast" rig from HF or similar import /silica sand3. Hydroflouric acid paste4. Contact paper5. replace glass
*charlie, george roberts is right about the lead glass shop. they use a chemical to etch glass. they might show you how to do it, so you can do it yourself.
*Try: http://www.warner-criv.com and http://www.delphiglass.comBoth are stained class supplier web site. My wife orders from both for her stained glass shop. she has also done some small glass etching with thier kits.good luck,Dave
