Live in a circa 1840’s two story farm house in Massachusetts. Would like to reshingle a 1 and 1/2 story kitchen addition which dates from the 1960’s; roof is asphalt over 1 by boards and intersects main house at right angles. Can I remove the cedar shingles from the main house and leave the original shiplap sheating exposed for @ two years? (Test exposure found original sheating fully painted and in good shape). How would one flash the intersection between the three-tabs and the shiplap? Larger issue, all the trim (windows, cornerboards, etc), is set to the level of the original shiplap sheating, which use to function as the entire exterior layer. With the later addition of cedar shingles, everything is quasi-recessed, and the waterflow is horrible. Does everything have to be brough out to match? Would appreciate any suggestions.

Sure you can. But why would you want to? Two years (More with typical delays) of rain, leaves, and bugs in your walls won't do much for them.
After reading your post 3 times, I can't say that I understand the rest of it. A picture or better explanation would go a long way........
My Wife walk with me when I take the garbage out. That way she can tell her friends we go out once a week.
