Cheese on crackers is good. The occasional mushroom in marinara sauce is good too. But how about mold in an attic? Not so good, right? After I increase the ventilation up there, what is the best way to remove the mold?

There's a constant source of clean water for you to use, and all you have to do is collect it.

Dry hot air!
Vacuum up whatever is loose enough to vacuum and leave the rest.
There's no practical way to sterilize it. If you could sterilize it there wouldn't be any point because there are always spores floating around to reinfect it. If you keep it dry the mold won't grow anymore, and if you vacuum up the loose stuff, what's left won't bother the people in the house.
I think you can spray it with a borax (?) solution to discourage further growth. But keeping it dry is the main thing.
Drying things out and spraying down with Boracare can make the location inhospitable for molds

Piffin,How dangerous is that boracare stuff to people, when they are applying it ?

It is simply an alkaline element. Present in soil everywhere, more so in the western states. No danger to people, but could irritate your eyes if strong application there. That is one of the advantages of using it - no danger to mammals at all.
The way it kills insects is that when they eat it, it will scarcify and immobilize their internals and digestive system. The alkaline environment is what makes it appropriate for molds and fungus prevention. When applied to or in the wood, whenever there is enough moisture present ( 18% or so, IIRC) to support mioold growth, then the boron becomes disolved and migrates through wood fibres along with the moisture, so it happily gets carried to wherever it is needed. You can get the Boracare to mix and spray on or you can get the IMpel rods to drill in and place in the timbers, or just use Borax laundry additive. For ants, we take soem powdered sugar 50/50 with Borax and shakle it up so the suger coats tjhe borax. Ants carry it back to their nest, eat it and die. ^The next generation hatches out and finds an MRE right there.

I am less concerned with insects than with mold, mildew, and fungus.I am, of course, looking for the cheapest way to fix the problems I have. Borax laundry stuff may be the solution. I'll have to figure out what is the best...

It works.Kinda.The problems here are VERY bad !It does work, but you have to do it full strength. And nothing I have found so far will keep my sinuses from being burnt at the same time. Besides the fact that you then have to abondon the abode for a while till the bleach dissipates enough.And... the problem will come back.I am working on "rebuilding" in a fashion that is not strictly in keeping with the original "plans". LOL But in a way that eliminates some of the problems inherent with being encapsulated with metal on all 6 sides.I have already discovered what a huge difference just a tiny bit of ventilation can make inside the walls, floor, and ceiling of this thing.Any sane person would burn everything I have, and start over again. But then, I'm not sane.;)I rebuild a bit at a time. As I do, I "ventilate", and treat for mold, mildew and fungus/rot.I am also going to have to use a bunch of laundry borax anyway, on all items cloth... (Laundry, duh. LOL) So, I might as well give it a try on everything else......It's kind of funny that this whole subject came up at this time, because tonight, I am fighting against a major sinus problem caused by mold and mildew.(Cleaning up a truck, a storage, etc... and mold and mildew was EVERYWHERE, and very thick. No way to NOT breathe a bunch of it in...)I am just fighting it the best I can for now. Come summer, there WILL be a bunch of burning going on. As well as rebuilding. And by next winter, I hope to have the important stuff in... hot, dry air... :)I guess I should be making a thread asking about air cleaners/purifiers that will work against this stuff...

During my hotel maintenance chief thing we were trained on the erradication (great word huh?) of mold etc.
Our training stated that as long as the area was dried out a solution of 5% bleach/95% water would kill any of it........even Aids.
Just a thought that you might be over doing it there. I mean maybe the 5% would kill it the same but not bother you as much for such a long period of time. Sounds like you don't have the issue taken care of so its going to return but using a milder solution might make it more tolerable. DanT
Good point.
