Furnace in attic and snow melt?
My house is a 900 sqft bungalow. The furnace is a side draft in the attic with insulated flex duct. The ceiling (attic floor) is insulated but I get alot of snow melt and ice at the overhangs. I am sure this is mostly from heat escaping from the furnace itself as the snow melts first directly above the furnace location. I know that the furnace should be in the heated space but that’s not an option. Should I insulate the underside of the roof or enclose the furnace in an insulated “box” structure?
Thanks guys
Mark

A first cut would be to suspend an insulated panel over the furnace, leaving a few inches of clearance from the roof for airflow. If you could arrange it so that hot air flowing off the panel was dumped through a rooftop vent that would be all the better.
Also, check the furnace and ductwork for air leaks.
