We failed out mechanical rough the other day.
Apparently code dictates that the air handler must be within 6′ of an access point.
Our new handler was placed next to the existing, the access point was 25′ away.
So now I have make a hinged door with a latch on the gable end of my house large enough for man and handler to get in/out.
I’m trying to figure out how to make this door. I’m concerned obvioulsy about water and the aesthetics as well.
We are putting osb on the wall then Hardi 8 1/4″. My thoughts were to maybe make it a vented door (I was going to tuck a vent under the gable peak) instead of trying to “hide” it with hardi.
I really am concerned about the water, and how to approach this DOOR.
Anyones expertise is/will be greatly appreciated.
I’m going to frame it this w/e

sail.. i'd buy a regular pre-hung insulated steel door and install it just like normal.. paying special attention to flashing details, and making sure it can be SECUREKY latched from the interior of the attic..
matter of fact... that's just what we did 20 years ago on a commercial bldg with HVAC equip in the truss space..
three months ago , we replaced that door because the jambs had rotted... but the modern materials will not rot ( composite jambs & casing )
it's a door to no-where, with access only by ladder or lift... you may have to install a rail & baluster on the exterior removeable by screws.... but check with you BI
a full size door would look .. well you know .. can you make the door a "design element" like a hay door on a barn gable or something like that?, post the style maybe someone's got an idea ...
Our home is a southern bungalow/Key West style home with 5v metal roof.
I am open to any suggestions, tips and techniques/approaches.
The vented door would knock out two birds with one stone.
The size really has to be only large enough for a man and 22" x 20 " air handler.
here's something like I was talking about:
I imagine like suggested just frame it out like any other door, and "hang" the door I make like any other door??
(not drawn to scale)

Hi Sailfish,
I would put in a all weather door and screw some shutter material over that to make it look like your drawing. You will then have a pleasing appearance and still have the opening weather tight.

how about a casement window?, modify the hinges, you could make it allot bigger and no-one would ever know ...
Double hung window w/ tilting removable sashes? "what's in a name?" d'oh!
I hada dal like that once on a commercial job. I bought a man-sized vent and hung it like a door to open out
