In order to unstuck a 36x96x2 1/4 solid exterior oak door on 4 ballbearing hinges I have to remove the door and take stock off the bottom of the door.
How can I remove and re-install the door by myself without wrecking my back or nipping my fingers off?

Make or use a lift. A drywall lift-sort of idea. Flat bar with a block under it. You can lift effortlessly and move it on the barrels.
Build up a stack of wide shims at the center of the bottom of the door in the position to set on the hinge. Rock it up and slip it in.
A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

this is what I use for lead lined doors that I deal with often(well used to deal with often)

The bad news is you've done exactly the right things to be exactly where you are today.

thanks for your suggestion
Even if I could find one of those beasts I cannot run the equipment on their finished floor; if I use plywood as "underlay" I will be higher than the threshold
This is an excellent excuse to buy a new tool. You need a "Doorminator", and you can lay down door skins to roll it on.
Whoops, forgot the link:

thanks for the link.
I ran into this situation only twice in 30 years. I think I will pass on the C$800 investment
Holy crap that thing is cool. Wish I would have known about that a few years ago. Had to reset all the doors on a Radiology building. Probably around 50 lead lined doors.
Doors were originally set without finished floor in mind, so I was hired to take them off the hinges cut them down and put back on the hinges. The doors had solid piano hinges from top to bottom.
Weird job, even the sheetrock had lead panels on the back, stuff weighed a ton.
Hanging that rock is a blast, NOT!
The hinge has a lead protectant o it somehow, and all boxes on those rooms are wrapped with lead.
The only plus side is the lead only goes up 7' inmost applications, therefore when you top put you don't have to worry about it.
Glad I am back to the housebuilding, hospitals suck the life outta me. (even though it paid much better)

Those doors weighed a ton, partially because they were wide enough to get a hospital bed through them. Most were 42", a few were 48". Add the lead and the fact they were solid wood I bet one door weighed 200 lbs. maybe more.
Did a little Operating room remodel once. Had to stop by and put the doors in one morning, no help. 2 four footers and one 42"er. Saved by the cart, had them done in about 90 mins. The bad news is you've done exactly the right things to be exactly where you are today.

That cart would have saved alot of money on my job.
It could have been done with one guy instead of two. And a whole lot easier I imagine.
thnks calvin,
The door is just a 1/4" off the finished exotic hardwoodfloor.
Looks like my only option is to hire a second person for a half hour job.
Have to clear this with the HO if he wants to pay the 4 hrs min rate
