I’m a new home owner in the Boston area and ice damming is destroying my ceiling and Frenchwwod sliders in a sunroom. Someone recommended that I look into galvanized aluminum roofing (standing seam roof panels)and water and ice shield as a solution. Does anyone have any advice/experience with it? This has been a recurring problem because the roof is at the back of the house which gets little sunshine and the roof pitch fosters the buildup of snow. Thank you.

I have been up that way a few times and have noticed a lot of metal roofing on the bottoms for this very reason. Down here in PA and NJ we use Ice/Water shield under the shingles on the bottom 6' of the roof and all valley's and walls. Some people use Ice Cables{Wires that run in a zig zag manner along the bottoms they heat up when activated} with great success if you can live with the look.
