Now that I’ve almost got the decking done for my 24×36 garage, I need to finalize the details on the roof shape.
It’s a gambrel, with the upper part a 5:12 pitch, and the lower about 8:12, with the kneewall 4′ in from either side.
What I’m trying to decide is how to finish the break between the 2 pitches. The simplest ones I’ve seen just wrap the shingles over the bend, but I’m not crazy about that look. At the other end, I’ve seen some with a 6″ or larger step from one to the other, which looks ok but means I either have to paint the exposed fascia or use a non-wood material.
So, I’m thinking about just making a break with standard dripedge. I’d probably wrap ice&water shield around the joint under the shingles. Will that give me a sufficient seal, especially in the winter when snow builds up around it?
Thanx
Don

That's about how I do it.
before putting on the drip edge, I run a course of cedar shingles with a 2" overhang, then set the drip edge on it.
BTW, that isn't much of a pitche difference, barely enough to be worth all the work, it seems like. I'm curious why and would like to see how it looks perspective wise.
Actually, with such a small break in pitch, bending the shingles over it might be all you need.

Excellence is its own reward!
Sorry, I wasn't paying too much attention when I gave the pitch - the lower section is more like 12:8 rather than 8:12.
Might end up a little steeper -- I haven't decided for sure just how much headroom to go with. Trying to not have the garage tower over the house too much.
I have a nice 3D model drawn up in Solidworks, but at the moment I can only get a large (1.8MB) .pdf output. Pretty basic gambrel shape, though.
Kicking the edge out with cedar shingles makes sense to get the dripedge out a ways. Sounds like a method worth stealing. Do you run IWS under the cedar shingles and then tarpaper over the dripedge?
Thanx,
Don
here's how i like to do them..

I bent mine over when I built it. That's the look I preferred. I had to heat them to make the bend but they held fine.
To each his own: design preferences is a personal thing.

There have been some threads about this in the past.
Here's one where the term "Faux Midwestern" was coined by Piffin:

Several interesting options there.
BTW - not that I claim to have ANY sense of style, but I think your brother's garage would look fine, at least around here (rural NH).
