I am in the process of renovating our family room which includes building a new mantel for our fireplace. The fireplace is a pre-fab metal wood burning fireplace installed into a framed wall/opening. There is a small gap between the sides of the metal fireplace and the wood framing/drywall. I can feel air leaking though this gap. I assume this air is coming from the uninsulated chimney box.
Can I fill the gap with a fire caulk or some type of fireplace sealant? The space can’t be more than 1/8 to 3/16. Thoughts?

My suggestion would be rock wool. Like FG, but 100% fire proof
Hilti makes a spray foam fire caulk that might work there.http://www.tvwsolar.com
