i don’t have a code book available right now, hence my question…
can anybody give me the wood framing requirements for a garage door header…opening is 8ft wide, 2×6 framing, and snow load is not a factor here in bermuda :)…
back in canada i know steel beams are the norm, but i’m wondering if they are necessary for this situation…
thanks

What load is the header picking up? If nothing, then all you need is backing for the spring.
Matasky,
Are 2 X 6 the walls? What type of wind shear? Storage above? Free standing or attached? More in info is needed.

I like to use 2x12's as a minimum, overhead door vertical tracks usually extend 12" above the RO, a 2x12 header gives them lumber to mount everything to.

My 16' garage door (in CA) has a 4x12 header. Roof is gable end, no snow load.
Could go to a lumber store or web page and find a engineered lumber catalog which will have tables for load and spans. It will give you sizes of ther product (lVL , Timberstrand ect.) then either use the same size or a little larger for you local available or Dimension lumber for your header.
matasky,
The header is carrying what load?
Truss roof, stick built?
Ridge beam?
Can't answer with out knowing loads.

8ft span; truss roof, conventional framed, or hip roof, a double 2x12 header and double trimmers will be plenty. depending on local codes you might have to use hold downs, but i don't really know without knowing.
