Hi,I have a garge with 2- 8 foot doors on it,I would like to remove the two doors and add 1 16 foot door. Can anybody tell me what size header should be used,I live in Vernon North New jersey.I was planning on using either 2-2X12 bolted together or laminated venner lumber.I thought better of the standard 2X12 because it would be easier to handle, any feedback would be very much appriciated.

Ray,
more info...what type of roof? are the trusses bearing on the garage door lintels or is a gable end wall...the best bet is contact your local lumber yard and they will tell you exactly what type of LVL beam to use.

*Just for information, I used a 12"x12" white oak beam 20' long for my garge door lintel but that might be a bit overkill.
*Ray ,I just did an 18' opening with 2x12x20's.We supported and built it in place 3-2x12,s with 1/2"ply in between the 2x's.After we put everything together with plenty of glue and screws. Then we built a short wall over (parallel) it for our upper deck and covered both sides with 1/2" ply including the header. Knocked out the support and nothing moved. This was a gable end.Good Luck! Bill d. QWC
*Frenchy D. I don't think it was overkill. You just have to buy the beer for all those guys that help set that mother. Bill d. QCW
