Got a gas fire place.
Exhaust pipe shoots up into the attic.. out through the roof
Proper sleaving
Problem I got is…. Too much of that heat leaking out into the attic and causing snow melt…. ice dams down the whole length of the roof
I got good insulation up there. bumped it to about an R-60 this fall.
What im wondering is… what can i do to eliminate this heat loss into the attic
Wrap that pipe with bats of insulation?
Box it in with some 1 1/2″foil faced foam board…
I just dont want to loose sleep over the fact that i might do something wrong and worry about a fire
your comments please
Thanks in advance
Steve

My reply (basically that I don't know, but would say something on the order of "Don't just do something, stand there"--meaning wait and find out what should be done before you do something dangerous, which you said you were already cautious about) will serve to bump your question closer to the top of the pile so someone who knows more than I do may respond. There are double-walled insulated chimneys that even have a sleeve for cool air around the hot part which may be your best bet. Anyway, someone else will probably answer shortly.
It's not uncommon for these flues to be encased in a framed chase running up the side of the house, which is supposed to be insulated, because it is within the building envelope, and drywalled for fire purposes. Check with the fireplace manufacturer. They probably have specs for clearance to the pipe and fireblocking, but I see no reason you couldn't build something like that within the attic, provided that you follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.
What Andy said.
General rule: the flue should be double walled "b-vent" which should have 1" cleanace from any comvbustibles.
B-vent doen't emit that much heat though, in my experience, so I'm wondering if you have single wall.
If you have a single wall flue, it really should first be replaced with B-vent for safety.
Thank ya thank ya...
i got a fireplace store around the corner... Im going to go talk to them. Bring them some pictures and there we go.
Thanks for your suggestions.
If only i knew how to post a picture on here.. i could put a few up.
Good Luck
