When connecting a flex hose to a stove does the adapter have to be a pipe thread on each side? (No flare on male end to the flex hose.)

The answer is yes. One end has a (female) pipe thread the other is (male) flared for connecting to the flex pipe. You should not screw the flared end into the female pipe thread.
