In the process of completely remodeling a kitchen. Client ordered GE appliances. The range requires a 40 amp circuit. The only receptacles and plugs available off the shelf for ranges at my local stores are 50 amp.
While at Home Despot I was looking for a dishwasher hook-up kit in the plumbing section. Could not locate it, so I asked an employee who took me to a small hidden section in the back of the store–Eureka!!
It was a mini GE appliance hook-up kit section. It had a 4 wire range cord and plug at 40 amps, dishwasher hook-up kit and a universal range gas line hook-up.
What the heck is it with the appliance manufacturers, have they never heard of “plug and play”? Hook-up kits for this, cords for that, while we are at it, let’s change the amplerage requirements. I picturce a group of engineers locked up in a room, snorting massive amounts of coke, and trying their best to come up with ways to make installation of these appliances as tedious as possible.

For now, I install GE appliances in the homes I build - OK - I HAVE them installed. I order the range cord with the range. The DWs have never been an issue. Although I don't do remodeling, I think part of your problem is letting your customer order stuff for you to install. Would have YOU ordered a range without a cord? On the ranges, I have them unpacked and installed by the delivery guys. I'm thinking it's about $20 which is well worth it just to not have to lug the thing in or around inside the house... I order directly from GE.
Matt,
Tell me about ordering direct from GE. They contacted me last year about it and I kind of blew them off. They quoted some smokin' prices. How has it worked out and how's the service?
Thanks,
John

It works out great for me. We (our company) has an assigned sales rep. He sets up appliance groupings (with alternate selections and accessories like cords listed) for different price range of homes. I have the catalogues too, but don't really use them much. When it's time to order, I use the customized price sheet and it takes about 10 minutes over the phone. These are spec homes though, so the customers aren't involved much in the selection process... the catalogs are online too. They have a delivery company or 2 and I can specify what level of service I want... delivered in create (box), delivered uncreated and set in place, or fully installed. For example I go with installed for fridges and ranges, in the box for Disposals, DW and Micros, as these are installed by plumbers and elect. On the rare occasion it is a washer and dryer I go with installed on those too.
Thanks for the reply. I'll check into it.John

Sounds like a plan. On this job I downloaded all the installation manuals anyway, so I had all the information that I needed for rough-in.
I was having all the appliances sent in advance to make sure things fit, but I now see that this is a huge mistake. Thanks for the info.
Some places people hard-wire dishwashers, no cord and plug. Other places, we want a cord and plug. So the manufacturors leave it up to the local situation.
There is no specific 40a range cord or 40a range receptacle. The standard pigtails and receptacles are rated for 50a and so can accomodate a 40a circuit.
Some kitchens have the older-style 3-wire range wiring and outlet and the newer ones have 4-wire wiring and outlet.........so the manufacturors leave the cord off because there isn't one standard. But a good retailer will ask the customer and at least supply the correct pigtail.

??? Our range is 40 amp, and the one before that was 40 amp. Since when did 50 amp become the standard?
