I’m no eng. but I think that is pushing it. And I have no idea what loads yer looking at, but I get a feeling it’s undersized.

Are those "breaks" sitting on a post or some support?
Bob's next test date: 12/10/07
Yes the 'break points' are support points, so the joints are over 4' apart. Much of this will have to be excavated in rocky soil so I would rather add support points than deepen the girder.Let's not confuse the issue with facts!
IMO, the whole thing is overspanned, including 2x6 joists that cantilever 4' out on a 7' backdropRule of thumb is two feet back for every foot going out on a cantilever, but that doesn't apply well for sizing joists always. And a deck is different than a free spanning interior. it is common to have more live load on a deck. I don't know if you have snow to consider either.

No cantilever Piffin. Double 'girders' all around the perimeter, breaking the floor joist spans into 8' and 4' sections so smaller and shorter dimensional material may be used for joists, as it needs to be carted across the lake!Have the code book but it doesn't list any building less than 20' in width. Figure middle girder has a contributing area of about 120 sq. feet, which, at 40PSF gives me a load of 4,800 lb., or 6,000 lb @ 50 PSF.Given supports at the ends, and 8' in from each end, with a 4' span in the middle, that gives me something like 1,800 lb on the 8' support points. It's all near to ground level so I can easily add supports every 4' if need be.Let's not confuse the issue with facts!Just found Ohio specs, "Girders supporting loads from a single floor shall not be less than 4"x6" for spans 6' or less, provided that girders are spaced not more than 8' apart." So it seems that supporting the girder at 4' intervals should do it?Edited 6/24/2008 9:53 pm ET by gdcarpenter

OK, 4-6' sounds good

Doable and what you want to do are two different things.
I would go for the 6' spacing.
Adds one post right?
Thanks to all and to all a good night.Let's not confuse the issue with facts!
